Climate Change and Invasive Species

Climate Change and Invasive Species

A Conversation with Curt Stager and Brian Greene

Join ecologist, paleoclimatologist, and science journalist Curt Stager and APIPP Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator Brian Greene for an in-depth overview of how climate change in the Adirondacks could accelerate the movement of invasive species to the region. The discussion will provide insight into Dr. Stager’s own research on the changing Adirondack climate. The conversation will then zoom out to provide an overview of the impacts of climate change beyond the blue line before diving into how warmer, drier conditions elsewhere could cause people to seek refuge in places like the Adirondacks where shorter, milder winters and regular rainfall will provide more comfortable living conditions. The discussion will then shift to invasive species, with a focus on how people are the most common method for spreading invasives and how a milder Adirondack climate isn’t just favorable to humans, it also creates better conditions for some invasive species to thrive. Participants will have the opportunity to join in the discussion at the end of the webinar.
